From digital novels to interactive books, to bundled e-book deals, technology is changing the way we read even the longest of narratives – but one start-up is looking to bring that change even further with a fee-based unlimited monthly reading subscription.
Oyster, which is currently testing out the service with a small community of readers, will launch its subscription service first as an iPhone app. The monthly subscription will provide subscribers with access to both classic novels and more contemporary best-sellers.
Besides the promise of unlimited access compared to Amazon’s one book a month Kindle Lending Library, the smartphone-based approach to Oyster could give it another advantage, as the Lending Library is only available for Prime members on Kindle devices.
Of course, the promise of Oyster’s unique take on mobile reading will depend on two major factors that are currently unknown: how much the monthly subscription will cost and the range of Oyster’s digital library.
