Wednesday Wonder: The Moscase

As we all know, most phone case are just that – phone cases. They don’t really do anything special besides hopefully save your phone from that gut-wrenching possibility of having your screen shatter into a million pieces. And really, isn’t that all we truly need?

The answer to that, obviously, is no. Just think about it. We’ve got standard cases, cases with enough protection to withstand just about anything, and cases with extras built-in, like a backup battery. However, at best, those cases only offer maybe one or two “functions”, one of which is protection. But, wouldn’t it be nice to have a case that could change with your needs? Maybe even a case that took all those extras and crammed them into one handy gadget?

That’s where the Moscase comes in. The Moscase is basically your all-in-one, who needs a bunch of extra peripherals case that allows you to actual change the case to fit your needs. One minute it can be your health monitor and the next it can be your speaker! And, the way it works it pretty genius.

The case comes in two different parts. There’s the bumper, which is the part that wraps around the outside of your phone, and then there’s the backplate. The bumper itself includes integrated sensors that can actually read your pulse, temperature, and even your body impedance, eliminating the need for those extra health gadgets. The backplate, which includes both a passive and active version, is then the part you can switch out for various different gadgets and functions.

So, what active backplates can you choose from? Well, there’s The Breathalyzer backplate, which seems pretty straight forward, then there’s The Rocker, which is a pair of speakers, and there’s The Collector, which features a solar cell that can collect energy and help charge your phone. There are also two more backplates, which seem like two pretty cool options to us.

The Booster backplate is again another backup battery, but it also gives you extra storage space for all those pictures and music clogging up your phone. And finally, there’s The Reader, a backplate that turns the back of your phone into an E-paper screen which is easier on the eyes and helps save power. Now, you can see notifications without flipping over your phone, read a book, and more. Basically, think of it like strapping a Kindle to the back of your phone.

Now, let’s get to the most important part – the cost! Obviously, this isn’t your run of them mill case, so you’re going to be dropping a little bit more than just $20 to get your hands on one. Right now, the case is running on Kickstarter and a pledge of $133 will get you the bumper plus a passive backplate. If you want one of the active backplates, you’re going to have to shell out at least $185! That’s some serious money for a phone case. And, from the looks of it, an active backplate alone will run you at least $69 to $89.

The campaign currently has another 18 days to go, but so far only roughly $21,000 of their $150,000 goal has been raised so far.
